The role of Design Engineering Leader will lead design efforts for transforming Industrial Design concepts into functional and manufacturable consumer products, while improving processes to significantly reduce development timelines. This position will champion product design from concept through to manufacturing while maintaining key milestones and stage gates to ensure ongoing communication and commitment to the deliverables. The designer will work with product development engineering, marketing, industrial design, and end user specialists to execute on the part and system design as prescribed in the design specification.
Job Responsibilities
- Work with Industrial Design and Engineering to realize intent and manufacturability/assembly of component parts and assemblies (DFM/DFA)
- Conduct predictive modeling simulations (Linear/Non-Linear FEA, Fatigue/Impact, Motion and Moldflow)
- Develop concepts to be fabricated into working prototypes utilizing rapid prototyping techniques for testing with the intent of mass production
- Develop product drawings and part specifications that execute on the design and functionality requirements
- Provide direction for material selection, design perimeters and ease of manufacturing
- Be innovative focused and deliver concepts that can lead to new product ideas and patentable features on the critical path
- Demonstrates the capability to understand consumer needs and translating them into technical specifications
- Partners with R&D, compliance and regulatory to evaluate standards for part and system compliance across the globe
- Partners with leadership to evolve the new product development process to reduce timelines
- Provide mentorship within the R&D group to raise overall performance of the department
- Deliver 3D and 2D engineering data to ensure products are executed correctly to the design intent, verified with tolerance stacks and simulations
- Ensure correct, efficient file transfers between all 3D file users; file and archive finished 3D models in recognized formats and locations utilizing PLM for product data management and BOM control
- Manage their portion of the timeline and disseminate knowledge of best practices within the department and drive out inefficiencies
- Demonstrate a high-level of technical expertise, root cause analysis, problem solving and judgement in evaluating complex issues and developing innovative solutions
- Benchmark competitive products and identify design alternatives
- Maintains documentation as required by the new product development process
- Limited travel to work with suppliers both domestically and internationally
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, design, or related field
- 5-7 years of Mechanical Design experience with a consumer/industrial hard-goods industry
- At least 3 years’ Creo experience, including advanced surfacing or at least 5 years in other 3D CAD systems
- Moldflow and Ansys FEA experience a plus or the willingness to learn both
- Evidence of strong systematic problem-solving using proven methodologies
- Demonstrates experience with intellectual property and the patent process
- Assist in writing technical specifications for the development and implementation of new products, ECN’s, continuous improvement and VAVE efforts
- Track record of leading design work on successfully launched durable consumer goods (on-time, on-cost, on-budget, on-specification)
- Extensive knowledge of plastic, metal, electromechanical and/or glass production design and processing a plus
- Effective planning/organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to multi-task and set priorities
- Provides technical support in solving post launch product warranty challenges
- Understanding of manufacturing processes
- Organizational and strategic agility
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills, especially communication, exhibiting ability to express ideas precisely, persuasively, and effectively
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in consumer products is plus
- Mentor or Leader responsibility experience is a plus
- Process change experience or experience with multiple processes is a plus
