The Hardware and Embedded Engineering Manager leads DYMO’s Electrical, Mechanical, and Firmware Engineering functions and serves as the technical authority for the integrated hardware platform across new product development and sustaining engineering. The role translates system requirements into coordinated hardware architecture, subsystem requirements, interfaces, and technical decisions across electrical, mechanical, and firmware disciplines, ensuring the complete hardware solution meets requirements for performance, reliability, connectivity, safety, manufacturability, and cost.

The manager retains direct technical authority for electrical engineering while leading and integrating the Mechanical and Firmware technical authorities responsible for detailed architecture and design within their respective disciplines. The role technically directs and challenges Original Design Manufacturer-developed hardware solutions and ensures compliance with DYMO requirements and acceptance criteria. This is a highly hands-on technical role, with at least 80% of time spent as an individual contributor focused on electrical engineering and/or firmware development and no more than 10–20% dedicated to functional management. The manager partners closely with the Systems Engineer/Product Architect, who owns overall product architecture, system requirements, hardware, firmware, and software allocation, cross-system interfaces, system integration, and final system-level technical acceptance.

#LI-MC2

Responsibilities

  • Serve in a hands-on manager role, spending at least 80% of time as an individual contributor focused on electrical engineering and/or firmware development.
  • Lead integrated hardware architecture across Electrical, Mechanical, and Firmware Engineering, translating system requirements into coordinated hardware requirements, subsystem allocations, interfaces, and acceptance criteria.
  • Serve as DYMO’s integrated hardware and embedded technical authority, owning hardware architecture, requirements allocation, cross-discipline interfaces, critical technical decisions, and acceptance criteria while retaining direct technical authority for the electrical subsystem.
  • Define and control critical electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and firmware interfaces, including power and charging, motors and motion control, printhead control, sensors, thermal management, connectivity, electromagnetic interference and compatibility, displays, mechanisms, media handling, and hardware/firmware communications.
  • Lead the Electrical, Mechanical, and Firmware Engineering organization, establishing clear technical ownership, technical depth, and accountability for engineering results.
  • Direct Original Design Manufacturer hardware and embedded development across electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and firmware, ensuring designs meet DYMO architecture, requirements, interfaces, engineering standards, and acceptance criteria.
  • Lead critical hardware design reviews covering mechanical and electrical designs, firmware architecture and code, component selections, design for manufacturability, and verification evidence.
  • Own hardware and embedded connectivity architecture and requirements, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, wireless modules, antenna integration, radio frequency performance, grounding and shielding, electromagnetic compatibility, range, throughput, and connection stability.
  • Ensure designs meet performance and reliability requirements, including component derating, tolerance analysis, thermal behavior, immunity, emissions, electrical safety, and foreseeable operating conditions.
  • Own hardware-level failure resolution and technical readiness, challenging root-cause conclusions and ensuring corrective actions and objective verification before acceptance.
  • Provide technical leadership for component obsolescence, substitutions, regulatory modifications, cost reductions, and sustaining changes.
  • Apply automation and artificial intelligence-assisted methods to test-log analysis, anomaly detection, failure-pattern identification, and engineering knowledge capture.
  • Standardize proven architectures, components, interfaces, design rules, and reusable test methods while evaluating emerging technologies for future product platforms.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience developing complex embedded electromechanical products, with deep electrical engineering expertise and technical leadership across mechanical engineering, firmware, connectivity, and system integration.
  • Deep electrical engineering expertise with the ability to make architecture and design decisions across power, embedded electronics, wireless and radio frequency technologies, electromagnetic compatibility, connectivity, sensors, motors, and electromechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate system requirements into hardware and subsystem requirements, interfaces, architecture, design decisions, and measurable acceptance criteria.
  • Demonstrated success leading integrated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and firmware development from requirements and architecture through validation, certification, mass production, and sustaining engineering.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams while maintaining clear technical ownership and accountability.
  • Experience directing Original Design Manufacturers, suppliers, and external engineering partners developing high-volume products.
  • Strong technical judgment and ability to make evidence-based decisions involving performance, reliability, safety, cost, quality, and schedule.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex electrical risks, design tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical teams and business leaders.
