The Senior Product Development Engineer will be responsible for new product development (NPD) projects for both new and existing blender products, while working within a cross-functional team. Some travel may be required. This position will:

  • Lead the engineering efforts on NPD projects from conception through production launch, while following Newell Brand’s Product Development Process.
  • Require the ability to work effectively with other disciplines including Marketing, Industrial Design, Design Engineering, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Quality, Sourcing and Supply Chain.
  • Demonstrate a high level of technical expertise and judgment in evaluating complex issues and developing innovative solutions.
  • Ability to adapt and lead various types of projects (Make, Buy, Hybrid).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team atmosphere.
  • Utilize creative thinking skills and talent for generating innovative product ideas and developing unique solutions to meet market needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop innovative products that meet customer expectations, meet quality and financial requirements as well as meet industry and government compliance standards.
  • Support multiple product development projects using a Stage/Gate process with a focus on defining the timeline and key milestones. Ensure deliverables are executed on time, to cost and to quality specification.
  • Develop deep category knowledge and become subject matter expert in relevant product category. 
  • Generate Engineering Product Specifications, DFMEA documents and product qualification critical parameters.
  • Create test plans and collaborate with internal test lab and/or outside labs that confirm the design goals.
  • Draft and review ECN and complete ECN related tasks.
  • Review Drawing and CAD, FEA reports, Gage R&R data and First Article measurements.
  • Conduct IP searches and collaborate with legal team on IP clearance and on patent filing.
  • Lead manufacturing trials, testing, measurements, and related documentation from initial tooling trials through production qualification (PPAP). Evaluate results and propose/lead changes to product design, tooling, and/or process.
  • Conduct comprehensive competitive assessments with the ability to identify opportunities to improve systems and generate ideas for meaningful consumer solutions.
  • Assess designs for safety, manufacturability, and other best practices.
  • Complete technical reviews of product complaints and provide technical support to resolve these issues.
  • Identify opportunities to revise and improve product design or product performance and implement these improvements to our product lines.
  • Participate in cross functional teams to identify and resolve complex technical issues, implement large-scale product or process improvements, or major cost reductions.
  • Have effective interpersonal skills, especially communication, exhibiting ability to express ideas precisely, persuasively and effectively. 
  • Apply knowledge of different materials to select suitable material for different products.
  • Apply knowledge of injection molding process to select suitable manufacturing process for different products.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical/electronic field related items on partnership project.
  • Lead project through NPD gate process as project/program manager.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Plastics/Mechatronics Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience/competency with Electronics is required.
  • 5-10 yrs experience in related field.
  • Problem Solving, Organizational, Planning and prioritization, Multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to manage suppliers both domestically and internationally.
  • Basic competency with 3D CAD packages (Creo{Preferred} or Solidworks) with ability to complete detailed review of 3D models and assessment of 2D drawings.
  • Basic competency with finite element analysis packages, with the ability to complete a detailed system review, provide necessary inputs to analyst, review analysis results, and make recommendations for product design changes.
  • Competency with product life cycle management systems (Windchill).
  • Understanding of plastic injection molding and extrusion manufacturing process, capabilities and design requirements desired.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and project management skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Competencies with other materials and manufacturing technologies (e.g., metals)
  • Experience in motorized consumer products is a plus.
  • Design Engineering experience is a plus.
  • Competencies with small electric motor design and production.
  • Strong understanding of systematic problem-solving methodologies such as Six Sigma, Shainin, or similar approaches to identify root causes, implement effective solutions, and drive continuous improvement within the organization.
