BASIC FUNCTION:

The Pilot Lab Technician will support internal and external development efforts at LMTC.  Individuals will need to be familiar in the current chemical production functions, QA laboratory functions, Pilot Lab functions, as well as, be able to learn and transfer new processes/products to manufacturing. Pilot work will consist of:

 

  • Coordinate pilot lab scale (Engineering Sample Lot – ESL) and production scale (Manufacturing Sample Lot – MSL) trials by working with Engineering and R&D to ensure vessel, material, and work instruction availability.
  • Make ink in lab size and production size batches that meet quality and project timing expectations.
  • Set up pilot areas and processes.
  • Understand and communicate test requirements for raw materials and pilot inks using in-house quality testing methods. (e.g. GC, FTIR, Spectroscopy, etc.)
  • Document and present formal reports of product trial results.
  • Perform basic analysis of data (e.g. interpretation of results, interpretation of historical data, linear regression, etc.)
  • Develop and write clear, concise work instructions for ink production.
  • Coordinate with Engineering and Operations leads to perform time studies of different production processes
  • Train existing Chemical Operators and Laboratory Technicians on new products or processes.
  • Coordinate with LMTC Engineering and R&D to create process flow diagrams and FMEA’s.
  • Ship pilot batches, raw materials, samples, etc. in a manner that is compliant with DOT, IATA, and IMDG legal regulations.
  • Support projects to achieve product line extensions, product line consolidations, and/or productivity
  • Manage data for manufacturing databases (including batch cards, HMRS, etc.)
  • Communicate with Quality/Engineering Manager and/or EHS Specialist, whenever samples are accumulated for proper identification of chemical hazards.
  • Participate and/or lead in site continuous improvement and safety programs.

 

This position will be exposed to a wide-range of analytical tools; including thought maps, process maps, multivariate studies, measurement systems analysis, and design of experiment. This position will also participate in Process Safety Management assessments for new and existing processes.

 

DUTIES:

  • Manage solid and liquid wastes (hazardous and non-hazardous) at batch process areas.
  • Implement batch card (i.e., personally within pilot lab, personally or with Chemical Operator within production)
  • Attend project meetings and provide updates
  • Maintain pilot lab safety policy. Develop/ adapt policy to meet new/ changing equipment.
  • Operate material handling equipment (i.e. forklifts, cranes, pallet jacks, etc.) as required. 
  • Manage hazardous waste satellite accumulation areas in accordance with 40 CFR 262.34 (c), and manage hazardous waste in accordance with 40 CFR 262.34 (90 day accumulation rules) and be trained in accordance with 40 CFR 265.16.
  • Complete Hazardous Waste training annually and conduct weekly audits of the hazardous waste areas in the plant.
  • Assist other functions in a cross-functional role to support LMTC team goals and objectives.
  • Carry a significant amount of responsibility in the plant SEAL program.
  • Count and adjust inventory as needed.
  • Actively participate in plant regulatory programs.
  • Perform other duties of equal or lesser skill than those described above as assigned by management.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred 2-year college degree in science/technology related field. Applicable job experience will also be considered.
  • Must be PC literate with the ability to work in a Windows OS environment.  Demonstrated fluency in MS-Word, MS-Excel, and Outlook preferred. Must be able to operate basic office machines (i.e. fax, copier, printer, calculator). Strong data interpretation skills in MS-Excel is a plus.
  • Experience with SAP.
  • Must be neat and detail oriented with good organizational skills.
  • Must be able to speak and write English and communicate effectively with carriers, vendors and company personnel.
  • Must have excellent (demonstrated) high school level math skills.
  • Must possess a strong work ethic and desire to maintain a neat and orderly work environment. 
  • Must be physically fit and capable of walking between job sites, lifting 50 lbs., working in difficult positions.  Ability to sit or stand for an extended period of time.
  • Demonstrated good vision and hearing.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access is a plus.

 

WORKHOURS:

  • This position is typically 10 hours/day, 4 days/week.  However, a flexible schedule is required to meet the implementation of pilot plans.
