The Test Engineer position will require an ambitious and motivated individual for a role on the Writing Business Unit Research and Development (R&D) Test Lab Department. This position will be responsible for the development and execution of consumer relevant test protocols used for claims substantiation, establishing product specs and conducting performance testing. The Test Engineer will also be responsible for leading and executing competitive benchmarking activities aimed to identify potential claims and performance opportunities. This role will interface directly with personnel from all levels of Research and Development, Quality, Regulatory & Compliance, Marketing, Manufacturing, Program Management.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop SOPs, test fixtures and documentation aligned with industry best practices / standards that can be used to substantiate product claims, validate performance specs and are consumer relevant.
  • Perform Gage R&R studies to validate equipment and test methods across multiple lab locations to ensure the quality of the deliverables.
  • Use a disciplined approach and the appropriate methodology to analyze and determine the preferred solution to technical challenges.
  • Coordinate and lead competitive benchmarking activities; Conduct an in-depth assessment of the product's performance, analyze comparative data, and extract valuable insights to pinpoint areas for enhancement or competitive advantage.
  • Identify appropriate competitors for benchmark testing based on market insights by working closely with the Marketing team to understand the market trends and dynamics.
  • Identify potential opportunities to claim superiority based on benchmarking test results and deliver insights for current/future innovation funnel with ambition toward winning in the marketplace.
  • Review and sign off on the claims submitted for New Product Development (NPD) projects.
  • Design standardized report formats/templates; Establish and maintain a database of benchmarked reports for future reference and analysis.
  • Establish strategic partnerships with third-party consultants / universities to focus on fostering the development of innovative capabilities and technologies that can strengthen claims substantiation.
  • Address customer requests on claims related queries by providing appropriate documentation.
  • Participate in Technical Reviews and claims brief discussions.
  • Partner with labs within the business to ensure test methodologies and results are aligned.
  • Summarizes complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience to gain alignment.
  • Review and provide training on current test methods and test equipment.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Chemistry or related field required
  • 2-5 years of relevant work experience in product testing required (Consumer products experience preferred)
  • Six Sigma knowledge (e.g. Gauge R&R)
  • Hands on Experience using a range of test equipment and devices. Direct experience with standard Universal Testing Systems (e.g. Instron) a plus.
  • Demonstrate a high level of technical expertise and judgment in evaluating complex issues and developing innovative solutions
  • Demonstrates strong communication, organizational, and multi-tasking skills
  • CAD experience preferred
  • Demonstrates knowledge of PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) or similar preferred
  • Demonstrates proficiency in lab software, e.g. LabVIEW, and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrates evidence of strong problem-solving skills including identifying problems/potential problems and developing solutions for smooth workflow
  • Maintains the ability to work independently and in a team atmosphere
