Role Overview
The Test Lab Technician evaluates writing products by conducting performance, environmental, and reliability tests. This testing directly supports new product development projects, VAVE activities, and the resolution of quality issues. The role works closely with chemists, mechanical product engineers, and test engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and conduct writing product testing including manual and automated writing, mechanical force and torsion, abrasion resistance, actuation reliability, and environmental tests.
- Interpret manufacturing drawings to perform part dimensional inspections using CMM equipment.
- Ensure test equipment is maintained and lab supplies are stocked.
- Follow standard test procedures and maintain controlled documentation.
- Execute test plans within scheduled timelines.
- Compile, analyze, interpret, and document test results in written test report summaries using Excel.
- Maintain records of product evaluations, including samples and sample identification.
- Clearly communicate testing issues in a timely manner.
- Work with Test Engineers to help build test fixtures and provide design input.
- Maintain an active role in the lab safety program and support all lab safety initiatives.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and stand or work for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in a technical discipline or two years of experience in a lab environment.
- Proficient with hand tools and measuring instruments such as force gages, calipers, and micrometers.
- Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment with time sensitive tasks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Clear understanding of measurement units, measurement systems, and unit conversion.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with automated measurement or test equipment such as Instron, CMM, or Taber Abrasion is preferred.
